Case Study: Suunto

"Multilizer has helped us to improve localization quality without spending more time on it.", Suunto Oy.

The Chief Software Architect Jan Storgårds of Suunto, Finland says:

Our Products

"Suunto is the leading manufacturer of sports instruments for a variety of sports, including training, skiing, hiking, diving, sailing, and golf. The software shipped with some of the products provides users with new, clear information as well as with illustrative and graphic representation of the performance in its entirety. In addition to performance-time data Suunto PC applications offer both pre- and post-performance features: preparatory functions and systematic documentation of all uploaded logs."

Our Clients

"Our customers are active people who want to gain performance benefits by using advanced measurement technology and data processing. Typical users are involved in a broad range of different activities, including diving, training, golf, skiing, hiking and sailing.

Customers come from different cultures all around the world. So there is a demand for providing them with information in their own language."

Localization Technology

"We used MULTILIZER® localization technology for localizing our software UI. Multilizer could be taken in use without changing product architecture. The binary-localization method that we applied for localizing the applications turned out to be both easy and efficient for our translators.

Translation of the software was outsourced, and we sent the free Multilizer Translator Edition to our translation partner along with the strings to be translated. Translators especially liked the visual views of dialogs and the validation routines, which saved both time and money both for the and for us."

Before releasing our software we both make a lot of minor changes in the software while software is being localized in the same time. Thanks to translation statuses in Multilizer, we had full control over versions being localized; we knew - and could filter out - "last changes" and ensure that these were also localized without compromising the quality.

Multilizer is currently used in the localization of 5 software products.

Supported Languages

"Our product was developed in English, and localized to French, German, Italian, Spanish, Finnish and Japanese.

After releasing our product, we stored the translations in Multilizer Translation Memory, so that they are available for re-use in any new product localization project.

We installed the Translation Memory on a database server, which made it possible to centralize the maintenance and use of translations and terminology stored in it. With the Translation Memory Manager utility that ships with Multilizer we have been able to review Translation Memory contents.

Business Benefits Achieved

My personal opinion is that, besides just achieving better results in less time, we saw a significant improvement in localization quality. On the other hand we didn't have to consume more time on this.

Future Plans

Just now we are in the process of completing first rounds of localization with Multilizer. In the future we will look further in making more efficient use of Multilizer's advanced features.
